Choosing A Countertop Surface
When selecting a countertop, several material options can influence both aesthetics and functionality. Consider factors such as durability, maintenance, aesthetics, and budget when choosing the best countertop for your needs.
Laminates
Laminates are generally the least expensive option available but offer the widest variety of colors and patterns to choose from. Today's laminate countertops can mimic the high-end look of stone, glass, antiqued finish or even butcher block wood design. While they are easy to maintain, they can be susceptible to scratches and heat damage. Laminates are an excellent choice to stay on a budget while creating a custom look.
Solid Surfaces
Solid surface products are made from acrylic and are non-porous, so stains cannot penetrate the surface. These products are low-maintenance and resistant to mold and mildew making them one the most sterile surfaces available. Products like Corian® come in a variety of patterns and colors so it is easy to find the perfect match for your home. Solid surface tops while easy to clean, they can be scratched more easily than harder materials such as granite and quartz. The material can also be installed with minimally visible seams and is repairable.
Quartz Surfaces
Composed of engineered stone, quartz countertops offer a uniform appearance and are non-porous, making them resistant to staining and bacteria. They are available in countless colors and designs, providing versatility for various styles. Quartz is fabricated like natural stone tops and seams will be visible.
Granite Surfaces
Known for its durability and natural beauty, granite countertops come in a variety of colors and patterns. They are heat resistant and can withstand daily wear, but they require periodic sealing to prevent stains. Stone is a product of nature and as such it will contain unlimited variation in color and pattern. Although we have samples available in our showroom, we always recommend selecting your slab at the fabricator so you can pick the perfect slab of granite for your unique tastes.
Concrete Surfaces
Natural in coloring and available with unique styling, concrete can offer a not so ordinary appearance. Concrete countertops can have any color added to them, or items such as recycled glass or stone to the mix. The counters must be sealed to make them non-porous and resistant to heat and stains. The end result is more modern and industrial than more traditional surfaces.
Butcher Block
Made from wood, butcher block countertops add warmth and a natural feel to kitchens. They are excellent for food preparation but require regular oiling and maintenance to prevent damage from moisture and heat, thus they are not recommended around sink or stoves.
